Fences/theme

Title : The family situation is symbolized through the "partially fenced" yard. The construction of this fence represents the different desires and thoughts of the characters toward their family.

Repetition of symbols and situations : situations:hanging out in the yard///bono discussing alberta with troy ///troy and baseball
Unusual situations and occurrences : gabe and his horn //troy and his battle with death and the devil Change in a character’s life : troy becomes a better father with each child.///rose stands up to troy and becomes an independent woman //
Shift in any part of the story : when troy tells rose about Alberta

A strong theme in Fences is family values and the importance of family values. The family situation is symbolized through the "partially fenced" yard. The construction of this fence represents the different desires and thoughts of the characters toward their family. Troy’s affair with his mistress Alberta represents a dissolving of those values, which Rose tried to hold onto so dear; the fence symbolizing for Rose the protection of the family. Troy’s delay of building the fence represents his desire to avoid responsibility, thus leaving Rose’s yard for another woman’s. The situation with Alberta represents a dissolving of those family values, causing Troy to become “womanless” and ultimately losing his relationship with his wife. Troy is redeemed in Rose’s eyes when the fence is finally finished.
